This week our Y13 TFA students took part in a career development trip at a local building site (Kielder Close). Aspen Build are building several social homes in the London borough of Redbridge.  On Friday, our pupils from Y13 were invited to look at a developing £2 million pound project to build 10 social homes.  We met with Site manager Tim Saunders who gave pupils a detailed tour of the live site. Tim spoke of changes to building regulations since the Grenfell tragedy. All new builds must now conform to new fire regulations with a focus on containment to avoid fire spreading.

Pupils took the chance to look around the developing project and were able to climb to the top of the scaffold to see the views of London.  Tim spoke in depth about project development and the daily workings of a site and its progress. James Doubleday (Manager of London & Essex Operations) gave our students a glimpse of management and the pathway he took to lead him to his current role.

James and Tim spoke about possible future career prospects and the pupils felt engaged and exciting about their possible next steps into the many, and varied careers in the construction industry.  We have been invited back to the project in coming weeks to see the ‘fit-out’ stage of the project. Once again, we would like to thank James Doubleday and Tim Saunders of Aspen Build for their hospitality and time.
